The Week of 2/3

Dear Families,

Preschoolers had tons of fun as they created our very own community using various small boxes. We now have several homes, a fire station, a police station, and a hospital to serve student residents (whenever an urgent Band-Aid medical treatment is needed for that invisible wound!) 🙂

We also have many fun things in store next week as we begin to focus more on Wheels.   Wheels are everywhere – from car tires to pizza cutters! Children will enjoy playing with wheels and use them in many different ways. This concept will help children expand their understanding of wheels and discover those in their community. They might notice wheels on a wheelbarrow or wheels on ride-on toys. In school, they might notice the wheels on the lunch wagon or the tires of cars in the parking lot. As they expand their horizons, they will gradually see how wheels work and make people’s lives easier. A study of wheels will also offer a meaningful way for children to use language in literacy, mathematics, the arts, and technology to investigate, learn, and represent their understanding of essential concepts related to physical development, science, and social studies. We will also use thinking skills to explore, observe, ask questions, solve problems, make predictions, and test our ideas.

If you are a proud owner of a “wheel” and don’t mind sharing, we’d love to have all kinds of wheels children could bring to explore. These include (and are not limited to) toy vehicles, spools, strollers, wheelchairs, tires, scooters, skateboards, dollies, wheeled carts, gears, books that feature vehicles or other wheeled objects, pictures of items with wheels, items children use to make wheels and pulleys, such as pipe cleaners, cardboard, lids, rope. We will take good care of these items and can return them to you at the end of the study.

Our Family Partnership CD Art Project is coming up on February 13th, and we no longer need CDs. Now, it’s time to put your talents to work and have fun! We would love to have volunteers who could come in on the 13th and help support the project. Please let us know if you are interested —we’d love to have you between 1:30 and 2:30 pm. We will open our garage door so you can work with a small group of students to decorate the CDs. We will then connect them to create an artistic chandelier for both classrooms. It’s going to be a blast!

We will also celebrate Valentine’s Day that day. Children are encouraged to bring a decorated medium-sized box (a shoe box or something similar) to put their Valentines in. We ask each family to bring/send in 16 unlabeled Valentines that students will hand out in the morning.

Finally, today, we kick off our February Restaurant Spirit Night with something a little different. We will be selling tubs of Eileen’s Cookie Dough today through Sunday, February 9th, with a pick-up date of Wednesday, March 5th, from 2:45-3:30. Each tub is 3 pounds (makes 33 cookies) and costs. $22. $9 from every tub comes straight back to Coronado, which is awesome for our school! All the money raised will go towards our amazing Science Fair and Family Science Night on April 9th, which everyone is invited to attend!

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend.

Kindly,

Annie
