Dear Families,
We are so excited to announce the start of our next big adventure in learning – preschoolers are beginning a new Creative Curriculum study titled Buildings.
Children are naturally fascinated by the world around them, and nothing captures their curiosity quite like watching a construction site or stacking blocks to build the “tallest tower ever.” This study taps into that natural wonder to help children explore engineering, math, and social studies in a hands-on way.
A Special Request: Building Our Neighborhood
To kick off our study, we have a special project planned! We want to bring a piece of “home” into our classroom construction zone.
We are asking that each child bring in a maximum. 4×6 (or similar size) photo of their house or a favorite building. Students are more than welcome to bring in more than one! We will be taping these photos to our building blocks so the children can build their very own “special neighborhood.”
- Please bring a printed photo. We kindly ask that you do not email the photos, as we need the hard copies ready for the children to handle and tape to the blocks.
- Please send these in with your child by Monday, January 12th.
What We Will Be Investigating
Over the next few weeks, we will be looking closely at structures in our community and beyond. Our study will focus on several “Big Questions” from the Creative Curriculum, including:
- What do buildings in our neighborhood look like?
- Who builds buildings, and what tools do they use?
- What are buildings made of?
- What happens inside different buildings?
Learning Through Play
The Creative Curriculum approach focuses on project-based learning. Here is a glimpse of what your child will be doing:
- Literacy: Reading stories about construction and architecture while expanding our vocabulary with words like foundation, blueprint, and façade.
- Math: Measuring “bricks,” counting stories on a building, and exploring geometric shapes.
- Science: Experimenting with different materials to see which are the strongest and most stable.
- Creative Arts: One of our play areas will transform into a construction zone, complete with tools and hard hats!
How You Can Help
You are your child’s first teacher! Beyond sending in photos, you can support our study by taking a “Building Walk” through the neighborhood or sharing empty, small cardboard boxes for our Maker Space.
We can’t wait to see the incredible structures our little architects will create. Thank you for your support!
Warmly,
The Preschool Team
