Happy Friday, Preschool Families!
We have had a wonderful week launching our investigation with Buildings. Children have shown so much curiosity and excitement as we began to look at the world around us with fresh eyes.
We spent this week acting as building detectives! As part of our investigation, we moved beyond just looking at buildings to truly observing their features.
- Variety: We discussed that buildings come in many shapes and sizes (tall skyscrapers, large grocery stores, cozy log cabins, family homes, and office buildings.
- Features: We counted doors and windows, and talked about different parts buildings have: a roof, for example.
- Purpose: The children did a great job identifying that different buildings have different jobs—some are for living in, and some are for working (services) or shopping. They no doubt recognized the King Soopers in our area, and some of them even filled us in on what their favorite stores and restaurants were. (Hint: The winner starts with the /m/ sound and matches a certain farmer who had a farm, E-I-E-I-O…
)
And – In case you need a recommendation for a good doctor’s office, check out this excellent (and colorful!) one designed by Poppy!
Next Week: Materials & Strength
Next week, we are grabbing our hard hats and digging deeper. We will be focusing on three big ideas:
- What are buildings made of? We will explore textures and materials like brick, wood, concrete, and glass.
- Who makes buildings? We will learn about the different roles on a construction site, from architects who draw the plans to the workers who pour the cement.
- What makes buildings strong? This is often the favorite part! We will experiment with balance and stability to see how buildings stay standing during wind or rain.
Have a sturdy and relaxing weekend!
Best regards,
The Preschool Team
