Happy Friday, Preschool Families!
We have had such an exciting week kicking off our Building unit. It has been wonderful to see the children transform into little architects and builders right before our eyes.
A Special Guest Visit
We want to extend a huge thank you to Ms. Fahima (Anya’s mom) for visiting our classroom this week! She shared the wonderful traditions of the Berber New Year with us. The children were captivated by the beautiful Berber music and did a fantastic job practicing new greetings in both Berber and French. It was a lovely way to celebrate our diverse classroom community.
A Look Back at Our Week
We began exploring the basic features of buildings—looking at roofs, windows, doors, and the materials that keep structures standing tall.
A big thank you to everyone who sent in photos of your homes! The children were absolutely thrilled to share their pictures with the class. We used these photos to begin constructing our “Preschool Community” in the classroom. Seeing their own homes represented has given the children a wonderful sense of pride and belonging.
As we build and explore, the children are working on several key developmental skills:
- Mathematics: Counting blocks, identifying shapes (rectangles for doors, triangles for roofs), and comparing sizes (taller vs. shorter).
- Social-Emotional: Practicing cooperation and turn-taking while working together in different areas in the classroom.
- Fine Motor: Using small muscles to balance blocks and use toy tools to assemble our structures.
- Language & Literacy: Learning new vocabulary like map, apartments, stores, offices, schools, community, sign, foundation, structure, and architect.
What’s Coming Up Next
Next week, we will dive deeper into the different types of buildings. We will be discussing the various structures that make up a neighborhood and the purposes they serve. Some of our focus areas will include:
- Community Buildings: Learning about places like the doctor’s office, the grocery store, and the library.
- Purpose & Design: Talking about why a fire station looks different from a house.
Important Reminder
There is no school this Monday, January 19th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the classroom on Tuesday!
Wishing you all a wonderful, relaxing weekend.
Warmly,
The Preschool Team
